HB Angle out of Shotgun Wing 12 personnel is a quick-hitting man beater built around the HB angle route out of the backfield. Off the snap the backside receiver runs a deep vertical while the underneath receiver breaks inward on a short crossing route to clear space, and the play side TE releases outside on a corner breaking route to stretch the defense horizontally. The HB releases from the backfield, checks the outside blitz, then bends his angle route across the middle for a natural pick against man coverage, with the QB reading the flat to intermediate crosser first and the angle route as the primary answer against blitz or man leverage.
Defensive Reads
Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if he is shaded tight to the backfield expecting to cover the HB, that is man coverage and the angle route will win the rub. Key the flat defender, if he sinks with the crossing route instead of sitting on the angle release, that signals zone coverage and you should look to the corner route for the window behind him. If the defense shows a blitz with the middle linebacker crashing downhill, the HB angle route is the answer since it releases away from the rush lane and picks off the trailing defender. Look for a user lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle zone, since that can jump the crossing route and undercut the angle route timing. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with deep safeties staying home, the corner route from the TE and the vertical from the backside receiver create natural conflict for the flat and deep defenders, so read the safety rotation before the snap to anticipate which side opens up.
Usage Tips
Attack the play from obvious blitz downs since the HB angle route is your built-in answer versus pressure off the edge.
Presnap, check if the defense is showing man coverage with the linebacker aligned tight over the HB, since that confirms he will bite on the angle break.
Hot route the backside vertical receiver to a hitch or slant if you see a single high safety rotating late, giving you a quicker underneath answer.
Pair this play with Stick or TE Attack in the same set so the defense has to respect both a quick game answer and a deeper crossing shot from the same formation look.
Use this on second and medium or third and short when you expect man coverage or a linebacker blitz, since the HB is your outlet against pressure and the crosser stretches zone underneath.
