Mtn Redzone HB Scissors is a Cover 2 and Cover 4 beater out of the Shotgun Wing formation with 12 personnel. Pre-snap motion brings the wing TE across the formation on a shallow drag that clears width underneath, while the two receivers to the trips side run a scissors concept: the outside receiver runs a corner route breaking toward the sideline and the inside receiver crosses under it on a deep dig that settles behind the linebackers. The HB releases to the flat as a check down while the offensive line slides to protect, making this a straight dropback pass designed to attack the seams created by the crossing scissors routes. The primary read starts with the scissors combo (corner over dig) working high to low, then works down to the drag and HB flat route if the safeties squeeze the deep routes.
Defensive Reads
Look for two deep safeties pre-snap, which signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and opens the window for the corner route over the dig. Watch the flat defender and curl to flat zone defender since the scissors concept is designed to put them in a bind between the corner and the underneath drag. If the defense shows Cover 3 with a single high safety, expect the corner route to be capped and prioritize the dig or drag underneath instead. Man coverage with underneath help from a lurking linebacker can undercut the drag route, so track the middle linebacker depth and mike point before the snap. Disguised zone blitzes with five or six defenders showing pressure should push you to the HB flat route as a quick answer against the extra rusher.
Usage Tips
Use this play on third and medium to long or in the redzone where the corner and dig combo can stress vertical zone drops. Check the safety shells pre-snap: two deep safeties splitting the field is your cue that the scissors concept will be wide open against Cover 2 or Cover 4. Motion the wing TE before the snap to confirm man coverage; if a defender runs with him across the formation, expect man beaters to hit late on the dig. Hot route the HB to a quick flat or check release if you see a blitz look with only five in the box, since the flat route serves as your built-in blitz beater. Pair this play with Y Drive Clown or PA Fork earlier in a series so defenses respect play action, then come back to Mtn Redzone HB Scissors to attack the same coverage shell with a pure dropback concept.
