Spot TE Seam out of Shotgun Wing (12 personnel) is a classic Spot concept married with a vertical seam shot, built as a Cover 3 beater. Presnap you get a five man route distribution: the backside receiver runs a vertical seam up the numbers, the inside slot pushes a corner route to the flag, the flanker runs a shallow drag under it, the TE in the wing works a quick hitch or spot sit at the sticks, and the outlet runner works a check into the flat off play action or hot route timing. Blocking is a standard five man protection up front, leaving the QB to read seam to corner to spot in a high low progression against zone drops.
Defensive Reads
Presnap check safety depth, if both safeties are backpedaling at the snap you are likely facing Cover 3 or Cover 4 which sets up the seam route as the primary win Watch the flat defender and hook linebacker relationship after the snap, if the flat defender sinks too deep the spot route sits wide open underneath Key the deep middle defender in Cover 3 looks, if he bites on the drag or corner route the seam route splits the coverage for an explosive gain User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the deep middle third can jump the seam route late, so if you see a defender crashing down from depth switch your read to the corner or spot immediately This concept struggles against Cover 2 Man or Cover 4 Palm since the corner route and seam both run into help over the top, look for the drag or spot as your answer in those shells
Usage Tips
Presnap identify single high versus two high shells before the snap since the seam route is your alert against Cover 3 or Cover 1 with a deep middle defender out of position
If you see Cover 2 or Cover 4 with safeties rotated over the top, hot route the vertical seam into a slant or option route to avoid throwing into the deep half defender
Use the spot route at the sticks as your checkdown on third and medium since it settles in the void between the underneath linebacker and the flat defender
Pair this play with HB Angle or Stick in the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and shot plays off similar formation looks
Against blitz heavy defenses, get the ball out fast to the corner route or spot since the five man protection can get beat by extra rushers off the edge
