PA Boot from the Shotgun Wing 12 personnel set uses a play-action fake to hold the linebackers before the QB works a bootleg action to the right. The backside receiver runs a deep vertical from the outside, the playside TE/wing releases on a shallow flat drag route that crosses the field, and the playside receiver stems inside on a deep dig/crosser that settles behind the flat route, while the far outside receiver climbs vertically up the sideline. This is a play-action rollout designed to attack man coverage with the crossing dig and flood the middle, with the primary read starting on the flat drag underneath and progressing to the deep crossing route if the shallow is taken away.
Defensive Reads
Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if they stay shallow and flow hard to the run fake it confirms this play will hit for a big gain underneath and over the middle. Key the flat defender on the playside, if he sinks with the drag route the deep crosser behind him should be wide open against man coverage. Look for a user-controlled defender spying the QB on the rollout, as contain from a DE or SAM linebacker can force an early throw or a sack before routes develop. Identify Cover 3 buzz or Cover 4 quarters shells presnap, since sitting zone defenders underneath the crosser can jump the route and turn it into a pick six. Man coverage with no safety help over the middle is where this concept wins most consistently, so target the deep dig the moment you see press or trail technique on the playside receiver.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs or second-and-medium when defenses are still respecting the run out of Wing personnel. Check pre-snap for single high safety looks since the rollout action and deep crosser stress Cover 1 and Cover 3 cornerbacks who bite on the run fake. Hot route the backside vertical into a comeback or dig if you see two-high shells to give yourself a quicker outlet against zone drops. Sequence this play behind Inside Zone or QB Zone from the same set so the play-action fake actually freezes linebackers instead of getting sniffed out immediately. Roll the QB with user movement to extend the play against contain defenders and buy time for the deep crossing route to clear the middle of the field.
