Inside Zone out of Shotgun Wing with 12 personnel is a pure zone run play, showing an in-line TE attached on the wing and a second TE plus the RB stacked in the backfield next to the QB. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, sliding as a unit to the play side to create rushing lanes based on defensive flow, with the RB reading the double teams and cutback lanes rather than a predetermined hole. Primary read progression is frontside gap first, then backside cutback if the play side gets clogged, making this a downhill run designed to punish overpursuit and light boxes.
Defensive Reads
Watch for stacked boxes with 7 or more defenders, which signals the defense is selling out to stop the inside run and should push you toward a play-action call instead. Identify if the defense is running a 3-4 under front with the strong side linebacker cheating down, since that can clog the frontside gap and force a cutback read. Man coverage on the backend with safeties rotated down into the box is a green light for this run because it thins out support at the second level. Watch the play side defensive end and 3-technique post-snap: if they get washed down by the zone blocks, the cutback lane backside will open for the RB. Nano blitzes or interior A-gap blitzes can blow this play up quickly, so if you see linebackers creeping into the A-gaps pre-snap, consider hot routing or checking to a quick pass instead.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box for a numbers advantage. Use the extra TE on the wing to identify if the defense is stacking the strong side, and be ready to bounce the run outside if the second level linebackers crash hard inside. This play thrives on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short where defenses are not expecting heavy run commitment. Pair it with Read Option or Speed Option from the same Wing formation so the defense has to respect both the give and the QB keep, and mix in PA Boot or PA Fork off the same look once the defense starts cheating linebackers up to stop the run. Use manual RB controls to press the frontside hole and cut back the moment you see a linebacker overrun the play side gap.
