Y Cross Flood aligns out of Shotgun Trey 4WR with three receivers stacked to one side and a single receiver backside. The backside X runs a deep vertical to clear space, the flood side stacks a corner route, a shallow drag underneath, and a flat route to create a three-level stretch on the sideline, while the Y crosses the field on a deep dig from the opposite side to attack the middle. The HB releases on a check release route up the seam as the shallow, giving the quarterback a five-man progression that reads high to low on the flood side before working the crosser, making this a classic zone beater designed to stress Cover 3 and other single-high shells.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single-high safeties tucked in the middle of the field, which signals Cover 3 or Cover 1 and tells you the flood side and crosser will have soft spots to exploit. Watch the flat defender and curl-flat zone defender post-snap. If they widen with the flood route immediately, the crosser sitting behind them becomes the clear window. User the deep third defender to the flood side if playing defense, since that corner or safety has to juggle the vertical and the corner route breaking to the sideline. Look for a linebacker spy or lurk defender sitting in the shallow crossing lane, since a disciplined Mike linebacker can jump the Y crosser if the quarterback stares it down too long. Two-high shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4 shut this down more easily since the deep out and corner routes run into help, so expect defenses to roll into two-high after seeing this flood look on tape.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or third and medium when you expect a single-high shell like Cover 3 or Cover 1, since the flood concept overloads one side and the crosser has room to work behind linebackers.
Pre-snap, check the safety alignment. If both safeties are deep (Cover 2 or Cover 4), lean on the deep out route and the crosser instead of the flood since the sideline gets crowded.
Hot route the HB into a checkdown or flat route if you diagnose a blitz, since he is the release valve and can pick up a shallow crosser look against man coverage.
Pair this play with Four Verticals or Switch Verts in your play-calling sequence to keep defenses honest against single-high looks, then come back to Y Cross Flood once you see the safety cheating up to help on verticals.
Against man coverage, use the shallow drag as a rub route to pick off trailing defenders and free up the HB or flat route for an easy completion underneath.
