WR Screen out of Shotgun Trey 4WR is a quick-hitting screen pass designed to get the ball out to the boundary receiver with blockers already working out in front. The diagram shows the outside receiver on the trips side running a shallow screen route back toward the sideline while the interior receivers release upfield to occupy defenders, and the backside X receiver runs a vertical clear-out route to pull coverage away from the screen side. The center and guard release out to lead block on the perimeter, so the primary read is the screen receiver first, working through the blocking convoy, with the vertical route on the backside as a hot alternative if the defense jumps the screen.
Watch for man coverage on the outside receivers, since a corner playing tight bump technique can blow up the screen before the blockers get in front of it. Identify the flat or curl defender assigned to that side of the field, a zone defender sitting at five yards or deeper gives the screen room to develop. Key the linebackers post snap, if they diagnose the screen quickly and flow hard to the boundary the blocking convoy gets outnumbered. Look for blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge, since a delayed screen recognition by an overloaded front creates a numbers advantage for the offense. Beware Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined outside corners who stay square and read run/screen quickly, as they can trigger downhill and stuff the play at the line.
Call this play against aggressive defensive fronts that bring pressure, since the quick screen negates the pass rush entirely.
Check the flat defender and the nearest linebacker before the snap, if either is sitting soft or crashing hard on the run fake, the screen lane opens up fast.
Hot route the backside vertical receiver into a quick out or comeback if you see a corner playing off coverage, giving you a built in answer versus soft zone shells.
Use this on early downs to keep the defense honest and set up shots downfield later in the drive, pairing it with Four Verticals or Switch Verts from the same formation to punish overaggressive screen defenders.
Snap the ball quickly once you diagnose the blitz look, since delayed throws let pursuit defenders close the edge before your blockers get set.
