Dagger Smash pairs the classic dagger combo on the right side with a smash concept on the left, giving quarterbacks a full-field high-low read against man or zone coverage. The right side runs a deep vertical clear-out into a skinny post/dig sitting underneath, while the boundary receiver runs a corner route over a shorter flat/hitch combo from the backfield or slot to create a smash read against Cover 2. The X receiver adds a shallow drag across the field as a checkdown against blitz pressure, making this a versatile route concept rather than a run or screen play.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and spacing: two safeties splitting the field wide open signals Cover 2 and tells you to key the smash route on the boundary. A single high safety shaded to one side signals Cover 3 or man, which tells you to key the dagger post/dig combo working underneath the vertical clear out. Post-snap, watch for a lurking linebacker or safety sitting in the intermediate zone, since a disciplined lurk defender can jump the dig route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the corner route sitting down in the void behind underneath defenders. A well timed blitz can collapse the pocket before the deep routes develop, so use the shallow drag as a built-in answer to beat pressure and protect against a sack.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high safety, since this concept has answers for both cover shells. Against Cover 2, work the smash side first: the corner route will sit behind the underneath defender and in front of the deep safety for an easy pitch and catch. Against Cover 3 or man coverage, work the dagger side: let the vertical clear out the deep defender and hit the dig or post sitting in the vacated middle void. Use this play on second or third and medium situations where you need a defined stick throw with a big play shot attached. Pair this call with Stick or WR Screen earlier in a series to bait linebackers into sitting shallow, then come back with Dagger Smash to attack over the top once they start jumping underneath routes.
