Inside Seam out of Shotgun Trey 4WR sends the boundary X on a deep seam route straight up the hash, giving you a vertical shot against linebackers and safeties who bite on shorter routes. To the trips side, the outside receiver runs a deep out that breaks toward the sideline, the slot runs a corner-flag combo working outside, and the inside slot works underneath on a short crossing route that settles into the middle void. The design gives you a clear vertical stretch on one side and a horizontal high-low read on the trips side, making it a solid man and zone beater depending on which read you attack.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is playing a two high safety shell or a single high safety, since a two high shell means the seam route will likely have a defender sitting underneath and a safety over the top. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the linebackers drop deep into zone drops immediately, the underneath crosser becomes the primary answer instead of the seam. User-controlled defenders who lurk in the middle of the field can jump the crossing route, so if you see a defender sitting in that window pre-snap, look to the corner route on the trips side instead. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can take away the deep out on the trips side, so know that route is a low-priority read against that shell. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is when this play is most dangerous, since the seam route wins outright against inferior linebacker or safety coverage in space.
Usage Tips
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see a single high safety shaded toward the trips side, the backside seam route will have a one-on-one look against a linebacker or safety with no help over the top.
Use the seam as your first read against man coverage since it isolates the X receiver against a linebacker or slower safety in a foot race up the field.
Against zone coverage, work the crossing route underneath first since it settles into the soft spot between the linebackers and the deep zone defenders.
This play works best on early downs or second and medium when defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells and give you the underneath crosser as a easy completion.
Pair this play with Four Verticals or Switch Verts in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect the deep seam every snap, then come back with Stick or WR Screen to punish aggressive linebacker drops.
