HB Base out of Shotgun Trey 4WR is a straightforward inside run play with the HB aligned offset in the backfield and the diagram showing a downhill dive path directly behind the center. There are no route combos to read since this is a pure run concept, and the offensive line uses base blocking with double teams at the point of attack to open a lane between the tackles. This is a run play designed to attack light boxes and gap fits rather than beat man or zone coverage.
Pre-snap, identify the number of defenders in the box; stacked fronts with eight in the box shut this run down quickly. Watch for linebackers cheating downhill or showing blitz, since a fast-flowing linebacker can beat the blockers to the mesh point and blow up the dive. Man coverage on the outside receivers often pulls extra defenders away from the box, which favors the offense running HB Base. Post-snap, key the play-side defensive tackle and linebacker fit; if they stack the gap immediately, the ball carrier needs to bounce outside rather than force it inside. Cover 0 and Cover 1 with an extra run blitzer are the biggest threats to this play since they add a hat to the box without sacrificing coverage integrity elsewhere.
Check the defensive front pre-snap and only run HB Base into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box since Trey 4WR spreads the defense but does not add extra blockers.
Use HB Base on early downs like first and second and short to stay ahead of the sticks and set up play-action shots later from the same formation.
If the defense shows a heavy blitz look pre-snap, consider audibling to HB Slip Screen or WR Screen from this same set to punish overpursuit.
Pair HB Base with Read Option and Inside Zone out of Trey 4WR so the defense cannot key run direction based on personnel or formation tendency.
User the fullback or nearest blocker if available to seal the edge defender and manually pick the best crease rather than trusting the CPU blocking every time.
