Play diagram for Y Corner from Shotgun Trey 4WR in Madden 27

Quick Reference

Breakdown

Y Corner out of Shotgun Trey 4WR sends the Y receiver on the corner route (red) as the primary attack option, breaking outside toward the sideline off a vertical stem, while the trips side runs a clear out combo with a deep post/flag from the outside receiver, a wheel out of the backfield area, and an underneath drag crossing the field. The single receiver side runs a comeback back to the sideline. This is a man beater built to isolate the Y corner route against a single defender in the flat to deep third, with the trips side stressing zone defenders by clearing space and stacking levels underneath. Primary progression is Y corner first, then work back to the shallow drag/comeback if the corner is squeezed by a safety or curl-flat defender.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender on the trips side pre-snap, if he is aligned tight to the line of scrimmage he is likely sitting on the corner route and will jump the throw. Key the deep safety over the trips side, if he stays true to the numbers he can rob the corner route so look to the shallow drag or comeback instead. Cover 2 with the corner sinking under the Y route and safety rotating over the top is the biggest kill shot for this concept, expect a contested or broken up pass in that shell. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the ideal matchup, look for the Y receiver to separate on the break point of the corner route. Watch for a user lurk defender crashing down on the underdrag crossing route, that can bait the quarterback into a low percentage throw if the Y corner is covered.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the corner responsible for the Y route is playing off man or bailing into a zone drop, since this route dies against a hard squeeze from a flat defender sitting underneath it.

Use this play on second and medium to third and long situations where you need a defined sideline shot and a built-in checkdown against zone.

If you see Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with the corner sitting on the flat, hot route the Y corner into a corner-post or speed it up to beat late-arriving safety help.

Pair this with Four Verticals or Switch Verts earlier in a drive to condition the defense to expect vertical stress, then come back with Y Corner to attack the sideline once safeties start cheating inside.

Against man coverage, motion the single receiver pre-snap to confirm man versus zone, then trust the Y corner route to win one-on-one against slower linebackers or safeties in coverage.
