Inside Zone out of Shotgun Trey 4WR is a pure zone run play with a 10 personnel grouping (four wide receivers, one running back). The diagram shows the offensive line flowing in a zone blocking scheme with double team combos designed to climb to the second level and wall off the front side gap, while the HB takes a slight angle behind the QB to hit the natural crease. Your primary read is the frontside double team block: press the mesh point, read the first down lineman past the center, and cut off his path (bounce outside if the front side is sealed, cut back if the backside is clean).
Pre-snap, count defenders in the box and check for a walked-up safety since Trey 4WR's 10 personnel often invites a nickel or dime look that lightens the front. Watch linebacker depth: linebackers sitting shallow (four yards or less) are keying run and will fill the cutback lane fast, forcing you to commit to the frontside double team read immediately. Man coverage on the perimeter (press corners on the trips side) usually means fewer underneath defenders to clog the run fits, favoring a hard downhill hit off the double team. Zone shells with linebackers spinning to fill gaps post-snap kill this play quickly, so look for a fast-flowing linebacker crashing the frontside gap and be ready to cut it back against the grain. A blitzing defense (especially a nano blitz or edge pressure package) can beat this play before the double team develops, so if you see extra rushers stacked at the line pre-snap, be ready to check to a quick RPO or bail to a hot route instead.
Check the box count before the snap and only run Inside Zone into light boxes of six or fewer defenders since four receivers are already out wide creating spacing.
Use the play action pass options in this Trey 4WR set like PA WR In or Y Corner on the very next snap once the defense starts crashing linebackers downhill against Inside Zone.
Manually control your HB after the handoff so you can plant and cut off the double team block instead of letting the CPU logic run into a clogged lane.
Against defenses stacking the box with an extra linebacker or safety in run support, kill this play at the line and audible to Read Option or HB Slip Screen from the same set to punish overpursuit.
Run this on early downs (first and ten, second and short) to stay ahead of the sticks and set up explosive shot plays like Four Verticals or Switch Verts once the defense starts respecting the run.
