Outside Zone Lt is a run play out of Shotgun Split U Off Close with 22 personnel, sending the offensive line and both backs flowing laterally to the left on a zone blocking scheme. The line steps in unison to the left, working combo blocks at the point of attack before climbing to the second level, while the fullback or extra back leads through the hole to seal off pursuit from linebackers. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the play side edge first, reading the block from the tackle and tight end, then decide to bounce outside, bend it back to the cutback lane, or stick it up through the B gap depending on how the defensive front flows.
Watch for a stacked box with the middle linebacker sitting tight to the line, which signals a run blitz designed to beat outside zone before it develops. Check cornerback depth on the play side, since press man alignment often means the corner is also responsible for run support on the edge and can be a scheme fit killer. Identify user-controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side pre-snap, which usually means the defense is jumping the zone action and leaves the backside cutback lane wide open. Look for safeties rotating down into the box post-snap, since an eight man front or aggressive safety blitz forces the back to cut it back immediately rather than bouncing outside. This run gets shut down by disciplined 3-4 fronts that stay square and read their gaps, but it consistently beats defenses that overpursue or send extra blitzers without maintaining edge integrity.
Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box since the zone scheme relies on the offensive line winning numbers up front.
Use pre-snap motion or check the alignment of the strong side linebacker and safety to confirm run support before the snap, especially against 4-3 or 46 fronts that stack the box.
Hot route the backside tight end into a stalk or seal block if the defense shows an overload blitz to that side, which keeps backside pursuit from blowing up the cutback lane.
Pair this play with Mtn Inside Zone and Spinner HB Zone in the same set so defenders cannot key run direction based on formation tendency, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.
Use this on early downs, first and ten or second and short, to stay ahead of the chains and set up play-action shots like PA Spinner Post Flood or Mtn PA HB Swing off the same look.
