Mtn Inside Zone is the base run concept out of the Shotgun Split U Off Close set, built around a 22 personnel package with two backs and a tight end to give the offensive line extra help at the point of attack. The line executes a zone blocking scheme, working double teams at the point of attack before climbing to the second level linebackers, while the fullback or extra blocker leads through the hole to handle any free flowing defenders. The primary read progression starts with the frontside double team, then bounces to the playside linebacker fit, and finally checks the backside cutback lane if the defense overpursues.
Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if they are stacked tight to the line in run fit alignment, expect a quick downhill blitz that this scheme can gash if your line gets the double team movement. Look for safeties creeping into the box, since that signals a run blitz or nano blitz package designed to beat inside zone before the back can find the crease. Man beaters and play-action shots off this set punish defenses that key run too hard, so if the linebackers bite on run action every time, expect the offense to counter with Mtn PA HB Swing or Texas U-Out. Post snap, key the playside linebacker's gap fit, if he steps up too fast into the wrong gap the cutback lane opens for a big gain. This run struggles against gap sound fronts that stay disciplined with contain defenders holding the edge, so heavy odd fronts with two gap defensive ends can slow down the frontside double team push.
Use this play on early downs, first and second and short to medium, when you want to establish tempo and keep the defense honest against your play-action shots from this same set. Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense has six or more defenders stacked in the box, consider audibling to Mtn PA HB Swing or PA Spinner Post Flood off this same formation to punish an overloaded front. Identify whether the defense is running a two high shell or a single high shell before the snap, since single high shells often mean an extra run defender and you should be ready to cut it back away from the flow. Pair this run with Mtn Cross Screen and Outside Zone Lt in your play-calling sequence to keep linebackers guessing between inside zone flow, screen, and stretch action. Against aggressive user defenders who crash down hard on the mesh point, hot route your fullback to seal the edge or cut off the first threat that shows outside leverage.
