Spinner HB Zone is an outside zone run concept run out of Shotgun Split U Off Close with 22 personnel on the field, giving you two backs and two tight ends to bolster the blocking surface. The spin action from the HB sells misdirection to freeze linebackers before he presses the play side edge, reading his blocks from the playside tackle out to the edge defender. This is a pure run play with no pass option attached, so the primary read progression is the frontside double team at the point of attack into the edge, then bounce or cut based on how the linebackers flow.
Count the box pre-snap. Anything under six defenders in the box is a green light to run this concept with confidence. Watch linebacker depth at the snap. Defenders who key hard on the spin motion and flow too fast open up cutback lanes on the backside. Identify if the defense is running a run blitz or gap exchange scheme up front. Stacked fronts with crashing defensive ends can blow up the zone scheme before the double team forms. This run struggles against heavy fronts and Bear or Mug fronts that stack extra bodies inside the tackle box, since the zone blockers get outnumbered at the point of attack. Watch for user defenders flying downhill on the play fake. If the defense sells out on the spin misdirection, look to counter later with PA Spinner Post Flood off the same look.
Run this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep defenses honest and set up your play-action shots later in the set.
Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense has six or more in the box, consider audibling to a quick pass or motioning the HB to check the alignment before the snap.
Use the spin action to your advantage against aggressive user linebackers who bite on misdirection, then press the hole with a manual cut upfield once you see daylight.
Pair this with Mtn PA HB Swing or PA Spinner Post Flood later in the drive since both plays use similar backfield action, making it harder for defenders to key run versus pass based on the mesh point.
Against light boxes with two high safeties, trust the zone blocking and let your HB press the line before making one clean cut rather than dancing in the backfield.
