Breakdown

HB Toss Lt is a perimeter run play out of Shotgun Split Twins Offset Close, designed to get the halfback the edge to the left side before the defense can flow horizontally. The offensive line pulls to seal the edge while the offset back and TE work to kick out the force defender, creating a bounce or cutback lane depending on how the edge sets. This is a pure run concept, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read is the edge defender's leverage: bounce outside if the corner or SAM gets pinned inside, or cut it up through the alley if the defense over-pursues to the sideline.

Defensive Reads

Check the alignment of the strong side defensive end and outside linebacker before the snap, if they are crashing hard down the line this toss can bounce outside for a big gain Look for a walked up SAM or overhang defender who can blow up the kick out block, that leverage dictates whether you bounce or cut it up Watch for defenses stacked with extra run support like a 4-3 under or a run blitz look, since those fronts can beat this play if the backside pursuit gets home before the seal is set Identify user controlled defenders flying downhill from depth, a spying linebacker or a user defensive back crashing the edge can blow up the toss if the blockers do not adjust Zone heavy shells with light boxes are the most vulnerable, since the toss hits before zone defenders can rotate down and fill the alley

Usage Tips

Call this against defenses showing light boxes or when the defensive front is aligned heavy to the strong side, since the toss attacks the weak side edge before flow arrives

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into shifting their run fits, then snap it once you see the edge defender widen too far or crash too hard

Hot route the offset FB or extra blocker to adjust the kick out angle if you see a walked up SAM or an overhang defender squeezing the edge

Pair this with Inside Zone and Mid Zone Lt in the same set to keep the defense honest on run fits, then mix in Mtn HB Swing or RPO Alert Swing off similar looks to punish overaggressive linebacker flow

Best used on early downs or short yardage when you need a high floor gain and want to set up outside zone tendencies for later play-action shots like PA HB Seam or Mtn PA Switch Sail
