Mtn PA Switch Sail is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Split Twins Offset Close that uses a switch release concept to create a sail combo up one side of the field. The mountain motion action and run fake hold the linebackers and safeties for a beat, then the switch releases confuse man defenders while the sail concept (corner, out, and flat routes stacked vertically) stretches zone defenders horizontally and vertically. Your primary read progression starts with the deep corner or go route off the switch, works down to the intermediate out or sail route if the safety jumps the deep shot, and checks down to the flat as a last resort against tight man coverage or a hard blitz.
Pre-snap, identify two high versus one high safety alignment since this determines whether the deep corner route or the intermediate sail route will be your primary target. Watch cornerback depth and press alignment at the snap, soft coverage or off-man leaves the switch release open for an easy completion on the break. Post-snap, key the flow of the strong side linebacker and safety rotation, if they bite on the play-action fake the window for the sail concept opens immediately behind them. Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, look for the seam defender's drop depth, a shallow drop opens the deep corner throw while a deep drop forces you down to the out or flat route. Beware disguised blitzes and user lurk defenders sitting in the shallow flat area, this play struggles against a hard edge blitz that beats the play-action protection before the fake completes.
Sell the play-action fake by holding the ball fake through the mesh point since the run threat from this personnel (21 personnel) is what actually opens the sail window against aggressive linebackers.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, two high shells favor the deep switch route against man coverage while single high shells mean you should prioritize the intermediate sail route since the deep corner will be capped.
If you see man coverage indicators like tight press corners or a linebacker cheating toward the running back, the switch release at the top of the progression is your man beater since the crossing traffic creates natural separation.
Use this play on early downs (first or second and medium) when defenses are respecting the run out of 21 personnel, then pair it later in a drive with Inside Zone or HB Toss Lt from the same set to keep the defense honest on the ground look.
Combine this with Mtn HB Swing or Mtn Lead Swing Spot in your play calling sequence, running those first to bait linebackers into aggressive flat and swing pass reactions before coming back to this deep shot off similar mountain motion.
