Mid Zone Lt is an inside zone run play out of Shotgun with 21 personnel, sending the offensive line and lead blockers flowing left to seal the point of attack while the fullback or second back leads through the hole. This is a run play designed to create a natural cutback lane, using zone blocking rules that let the offensive line combo block down and climb to linebackers rather than firing off assignments to specific defenders. The primary read progression starts with the play side double team, then reads the first true defender at the point of attack (usually a defensive tackle or 4i technique), and finally works to the backside cutback lane if the front flows too hard to the play side.
Pre-snap, identify the strength of the defensive front and check if the middle linebacker is stacked over center or shaded to either side, since this affects which gap will be softest. Look for safety rotation, if both safeties stay high in a two high shell, the box is likely light and this run has a better chance to hit for positive yardage. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles to see if they are two gapping or shooting gaps, since penetration from a gap shooting tackle can blow up the zone scheme before the back reaches the line. Watch for a user controlled linebacker flowing hard downhill early, since that often signals a run blitz that can be countered by cutting back away from the flow. This play struggles against stacked eight man fronts or aggressive run blitzes with linebackers crashing the play side gap pre-snap, so be ready to check to a different concept if you see heavy run commit looks.
Run this play against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since the extra gap created by the offset back allows the offensive line to win numbers battles up front. Pre-snap, check for run blitzes or overloaded fronts to the left, and if you see a linebacker creeping into the play side gap, consider audibling to HB Toss Lt or Inside Zone to attack a different gap. Use the offset fullback as an extra lead blocker by manually controlling him through the hole to seal off a second level defender or a blitzing linebacker. This play works best on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium, when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts rather than nickel or dime packages. Pair Mid Zone Lt with play-action shots like Mtn PA Switch Sail or PA HB Seam in the same set to keep linebackers and safeties honest against the run look before hitting them with a vertical shot.
