Mtn Lead Swing Spot is a Shotgun 21 personnel play-action style dropback concept built around a spot route combo with a swing route out of the backfield as a checkdown valve. The Spot route (hitch, flat, corner combo) attacks underneath zone defenders and creates natural picks against man coverage, while the HB swing gives you an easy answer versus blitz looks or when the read side is clogged. Primary read progression starts with the spot concept to the trips or twin side, working high to low from the corner route down to the flat, then checking down to the HB swing if the underneath defenders sink or if pressure forces an early release.
Read the strong safety depth pre-snap, if he is sitting shallow near the box expect Cover 3 sink where the corner route in the spot concept should be your first target. Watch the flat defender or curl to flat linebacker at the snap, if he widens quickly to take away the flat that opens the corner route window over the top. Identify blitz packages by checking linebacker depth and edge alignment pre-snap, since this play's HB swing is an effective answer against nano blitzes or five man pressure that leaves the backfield uncovered. User controlled defenders lurking in the shallow zone can jump the flat route or the swing route, so double check for a spy or a defender sitting in the throwing lane before committing to the checkdown. This play struggles against disciplined Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells with deep safeties sitting on the corner route, so be ready to check down early or use a different concept from this set like PA Slide Y Cross if you see two deep safeties holding their zones.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick shift to identify if the defense is showing man or zone before the snap, since the spot concept behaves very differently against Cover 3 sink versus Cover 1 press.
Against zone coverage look to hit the corner route sitting behind the flat defender first, and if that window is closed work down to the flat route since the spot concept is designed to stress zone defenders from top to bottom.
Against man coverage the HB swing becomes a legitimate first read because it forces a linebacker or safety to run with the back in space, giving you a favorable matchup for extra yards after catch.
This play pairs well with Mtn HB Swing and RPO Alert Swing in the same set since all three sell HB routes out of the backfield, allowing you to condition the defense to bite on the swing action before hitting a deeper shot like PA HB Seam or Flood.
Use this on early down and medium distance since the built in checkdown protects against negative plays while still giving you access to a corner route shot if the defense sells out on the run action.
