RPO Alert Swing is a run-pass option out of Shotgun Split Twins Offset Close that pairs an inside zone run scheme with a swing route to the offset back as the alert throw. The quarterback reads the play side linebacker or edge defender to decide whether to hand off or pull and fire the swing pass into the flat. Because it is a true RPO, this play beats aggressive run fits and overzealous linebackers who crash downhill, while the swing route serves as a built-in answer to blitzes and flat defenders stepping up to fill run lanes.
Watch the play side linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits back or shows contain discipline, take the run because the box is honest. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 1 shells pre-snap since these shells often leave the flat exposed once the linebacker steps up to fill. Look for a nickel or slot corner sitting in an underneath zone, since he can jump the swing route if he reads quarterback eyes early. Beware user-controlled linebackers who bait the run look then drop into a lurk position to intercept the swing throw. Against a hard edge blitz, the swing route wins almost automatically since the flat defender responsible for that area is usually occupied elsewhere or out of position.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the second level to see if linebackers are stacked tight to the box, which signals a run read advantage.
If the defense shows a heavy blitz look with defenders crashing off the edge, key the flat defender immediately and be ready to pull the ball for the swing.
This play shines on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when defenses are more likely to sell out against the run.
Pair this call with Inside Zone and Mid Zone Lt earlier in a series so the defense over commits to run fits, making the RPO alert swing hit even harder later in the game.
Hot route the swing back deeper into the flat against man coverage to create extra separation from a trailing linebacker or nickel defender.
