Inside Zone out of Shotgun Split Twins Offset Close is a run play built off a zone blocking scheme with the offensive line stepping in unison to the play side, sealing gaps and letting the running back find the crease. With 21 personnel on the field, the offset fullback (or second RB) provides an extra lead blocker at the point of attack, giving the ball carrier a natural double team look at the line of scrimmage. The primary read is a one cut decision at the mesh point: identify whether the play side gap is sealed or if the backside cutback lane is open based on how the defensive line and linebackers flow.
Watch the defensive tackles pre-snap. If they are shaded toward the play side A gap, the cutback lane behind them becomes the primary lane once the play side is sealed. Key the mike linebacker depth at the snap. A linebacker sitting at five yards or deeper signals a soft front that this play can exploit for a clean gap read. Identify any nano blitz packages disguised as a base 4-3 or 3-4 look. If both inside linebackers crash downhill immediately at the snap without reading blocks, bounce the run outside rather than forcing it inside. Against user controlled defenders, watch for a spy or lurk defender sitting in the backside cutback lane, this is the most common way skilled opponents shut down inside zone concepts. Heavy fronts with an extra defensive lineman or a stacked box of seven plus defenders neutralize this play, in that case switch to the play action options in this set to punish the aggressive run fits.
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into showing blitz or flowing early so you can identify the run fit before the snap.
Check the box count before the snap. If there are six or more defenders stacked in the box, consider audibling to a play action shot off this same look instead of forcing the run.
Hot route the offset back into a lead block adjustment if you see a will linebacker cheating toward the play side A gap, this reinforces the double team and creates a cleaner cutback lane.
Pair Inside Zone with Mtn PA Switch Sail or PA HB Seam from this set since both plays share the same backfield action, forcing linebackers to respect the run fit before dropping into coverage.
Run this play on early downs or in short yardage situations where defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts rather than nickel or dime packages that remove run defenders.
