Go's Y Shake out of Empty Trey stacks four vertical stems to the outside receivers while the inside slot runs a shake route, breaking hard outside then snapping back across the middle. With five receivers out and no protection help, this is a pure man beater designed to stress leverage on both boundaries and pick on any lurking linebacker in the shallow zone. The primary read progression starts with the Y shake for a quick separation throw, then works out to the two outside go routes on either side if the middle is jumped.
Pre-snap, identify safety depth and rotation since a two high shell forces the shake route to be the primary answer against the four verticals clogging deep thirds. Watch linebacker alignment over the slot, if they show blitz or crash down hard the shake route has room to settle for an easy pitch and catch. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field, that lurk threat is the biggest danger to the shake route and can bait a turnover. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by both outside go routes, so watch for hip turn and trail technique from the corners immediately after the snap. Cover 3 with sunk zone drops taken by linebackers can rob the shake route, forcing the quarterback to work the boundary verticals instead.
Check the box count pre-snap since Empty Trey leaves no protection, so this play is best called against three or four man rushes on early downs. Look for single high safety shells before the snap, since the go routes on both boundaries have a strong chance of getting behind a Cover 3 or Cover 1 corner. Use the shake route as your rhythm throw against zone drops that widen with the verticals, it settles into the void vacated by flowing linebackers. Hot route the backside go into a comeback or hitch if you see a corner playing deep off coverage to counter their cushion. Pair this call with Curls Y-Shake or Four Verticals in the same set to keep defenses guessing between vertical stress and underneath option routes off similar splits.
