Shock is a man beating concept out of Shotgun Empty Trey that uses pre-snap motion to help identify man versus zone before the ball is even snapped. With five eligible receivers spread across the field and no running back in the backfield, the route combination is built to create immediate separation against man coverage through natural picks and crossing patterns while giving the quarterback a quick rhythm throw underneath if the defense plays soft zone. The primary read starts with the motion receiver to confirm coverage, then progresses to the shallow crosser working from the trey side back to the isolated single receiver for a one on one win.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment. Two high safeties who stay still through the motion usually signal zone, while a safety who cheats or rotates toward the trips side signals man or a coverage rotation to that side. Watch the linebacker assigned to shadow the motion receiver. If he follows across the formation instead of staying in his zone drop, that confirms man coverage and opens up the crossing routes for easy separation. Post-snap, identify any user controlled defender sitting in a shallow zone or lurking near the crossing routes since a smart user player will jump the shallow crosser and try to bait a turnover. This play struggles against pattern match zone coverages like Cover 6 or Cover 4 match since defenders can sink and mirror the crossers rather than following man rules. Look for blitz packages that send extra rushers off the single receiver side. Since Empty formations have no running back to check release, a well timed edge blitz can collapse the pocket before your progression reaches the crosser.
Use the pre-snap motion to bait linebackers and safeties into revealing man coverage through their eyes following the motion man across the formation.
If the defender assigned to the motion receiver runs with him across the formation, you are almost certainly looking at man coverage and should trust your first read.
This play excels on third and medium to third and long since the crossing routes create natural separation against man and the underneath option gives you a checkdown against zone blitzes.
Pair Shock with QB Draw or WR Screen earlier in a series to condition the defense into sitting on shorter routes, then hit them with this concept when they bite on run fits or screen keys.
Against teams that show heavy blitz tendencies, hot route your single receiver into a quick out or slant to give yourself an answer versus man pressure without needing a deep progression.
Since this is an Empty backfield, watch pre-snap for extra defenders creeping into the box since there is no back to check release and pick up a blitzer.
