Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing a split two-high shell typical of Cover 4, since that is the shell this concept is designed to exploit through the crossing drive route. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the middle linebacker sits shallow and flows hard with the drive route, that confirms zone match rules and tells the user defender to stay disciplined rather than biting. Key the flat defender on the strong side, if he widens immediately to the TE out route, the underneath drive concept has extra room to settle in the vacated middle. Man coverage with a single high safety shuts this down quickly since the drive route has no natural rub or pick to shake tight man leverage, so bail into press man if you see empty trey with no backfield help. Watch for a user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow middle zone, since that lurk threat is the single biggest counter to the drive route sitting down in the void.
Usage Tips
Diagnose the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two deep safeties split wide with no true middle defender, the drive route crossing the field will have a natural throwing lane against Cover 4 shells. Use the drive route as your first read since it works away from the boundary safety and settles in the void that quarters coverage struggles to fill. If the defense shows man coverage press at the line, hot route the near slot in-cut into a quick option or slant to beat off-man leverage before the crosser has time to develop. This play shines on second and medium to third and short since the drive route timing needs a beat to clear the hash, so avoid calling it on obvious third and long against disciplined zone drops. Pair Slot Drive with Four Verticals or Y-Post Ohio in the same drive to condition the defense to sit on shallow crossers, then hit the verticals concept once linebackers start jumping the drive route.
