Breakdown

From Empty Trey, all five eligible receivers release vertically to attack the deep and intermediate zones, with the four outside and slot receivers running true verticals while the inside trips receiver runs a quick out and up to occupy underneath defenders. There is no blocking assignment shown since the backfield is empty, so this is a max protect via route timing rather than a run play or screen. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built to isolate the deep safeties, and the primary read progression starts outside with the boundary vertical, then works to the field-side verticals based on the middle safety's leverage.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and spacing: two safeties split wide signals Cover 2 or Cover 4, a single deep safety in the middle signals Cover 3 or Cover 1. Watch the middle linebacker's post-snap drop, since a slow or shallow drop opens the inside seam for an easy explosive play. Identify user-controlled safeties jumping the route stems, which is the biggest threat to this concept since a jumped seam or vertical results in a pick-six. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the worst matchup for the defense, so look for blitz packages that bring extra rushers with man coverage behind them. Cover 4 quarters shells with disciplined deep defenders and a spy underneath shut this down hardest, forcing the offense to check down or take a sack.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify single-high versus two-high safety alignment before the ball is snapped since this play lives or dies on stressing the deep safeties.

Against Cover 3, target the seam route created by the two inside verticals since the middle linebacker cannot cover both and the corner is forced to widen.

Against Cover 2, throw off the safety's hips: if he steps to the field verticals, hit the boundary route on a rope throw before the corner can undercut it.

Use hot routes to convert the shortest route into a hot read against zone blitzes, keeping a checkdown option if the deep windows are jumped.

Pair this play with Slot Drive or Curls Y-Shake in the same set so the defense sees the same Empty Trey alignment and cannot key on verticals every snap.
