Stick N Nod is a five-man empty route concept out of Shotgun Empty Trey Flex that leans on quick stick combos and a nod route from the backside to attack both man and zone coverage. The trey side runs the classic stick concept, a flat route, a stick (hitch/settle) route, and a corner route stacked together, forcing linebackers and nickel defenders to declare on the flat-to-stick relationship. The backside receiver runs the nod route, a hard vertical stem that breaks down into a hitch, giving you a built-in man beater against a single high safety look. Your primary progression starts with the stick and flat combo to the trey side, then works back to the nod route if the defense rolls coverage away from the trio.
Watch the flat defender and the second level linebacker responsible for the stick route, since Stick N Nod exploits any hesitation or flat foot drops from zone defenders who try to cover both. Key the corner over the nod receiver, if he is playing off man or bailing into a zone drop, the hitch at the top of the nod stem will sit down in open grass for an easy completion. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells presnap, since curl/flat defenders in these zones tend to widen or sink too early, leaving the stick route open in the intermediate window. Beware of a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle, this play struggles against Tampa 2 style looks where an underneath defender can undercut the stick throw. Man coverage with no safety help over the nod route is a green light, but if the defense shows Cover 1 with a deep half safety rotated over that side, expect the nod route to get taken away and check down to the stick or flat instead.
Presnap, identify whether the defense is showing two high safeties or a single high shell, since Stick N Nod thrives against zone drops that leave the stick/flat area soft.
If you see man coverage with no help over the top, hot route the nod receiver into a speed release stick or just trust the natural break, since the double move at the top of the nod stem creates instant separation against trailing corners.
Use this play on early downs or third and short to medium, since the stick concept gives you multiple layups underneath while the nod route provides an explosive shot if the defense bites on the flat.
Pair this call with Smash Y Sit or Smash Z Under from the same set to keep defenders honest on flat versus corner conflicts, then come back to Stick N Nod once the defense starts jumping the underneath stick routes.
Sequence this with Four Verticals or Y Corner later in a drive so the defense respects the vertical shot off empty trey, opening up the stick and nod combo underneath as defenders sit deeper.
