Watch for a light box pre-snap with only four or fewer defenders showing near the line, since that confirms space for the draw to hit. Man coverage with defensive backs turning their backs to the quarterback at the snap is a green light, since it removes eyes from the backfield. Heavy blitz calls with linebackers crashing off the edge actually help this play by vacating interior gaps, so trust the delayed handoff timing. Defenses that keep a linebacker spying the quarterback or run a 3-4 look with two inside linebackers sitting at normal depth will close the cutback lane quickly. User-controlled defenders flying downhill on jet sweep or bootleg fakes can be baited out of position, so scan for overaggressive user movement before committing to a lane.
Call this on early downs or in short yardage situations like third and one or two to catch defenses expecting a quick pass out of empty personnel.
Pre-snap, check for a lack of a true middle linebacker or a defense showing all-out blitz looks, since aggressive blitz packages leave huge cutback lanes for QB Draw.
Avoid calling this against defenses stacked with extra defensive linemen or heavy zone blitz fronts that keep spies or gap fillers at home.
Mix this in after running Stick Ohio or WR Screen from the same set so defenders start keying quick outlets and cheat up, opening the draw lane on the very next snap.
Use manual motion or a hard count to see if linebackers jump the snap, then trust your protection to hold for the mesh point before hitting the crease.
