Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment since two deep safeties indicate Cover 2 or Cover 4 which gives underneath crossers more room but invites a squeeze from flat defenders. Watch linebacker depth at the snap because shallow linebacker drops signal man coverage or a Cover 3 buzz, both of which the deep crosser can exploit if the defender is late to carry across the formation. Identify any user-controlled defender flowing to the crosser's landmark early since a lurking user in the middle of the field is the biggest threat to this concept and can bait the quarterback into a turnover. Man coverage with no safety help over the top, especially Cover 0 or Cover 1, gets beaten badly by the rub created between the two crossers. If you see off man or press man across the board, trust the deep crosser to win versus a trailing corner or a linebacker in coverage. Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, hot route the outside receivers into hitches or sits to occupy the flat defenders and open passing lanes for the crossers. This play pairs well with Four Verticals and Wdt Post in your play-calling sequence since all three attack downfield off the same Empty Trey Flex look, keeping the defense honest and preventing them from sitting on the shallow crosser. Best called on second or third and medium since the developing crossers need a beat to clear traffic, so avoid using this on obvious passing downs where the pass rush can disrupt the timing.
