Y Corner out of Shotgun Empty Trey Flex isolates the Y receiver on a corner route while the rest of the empty formation stretches the field with underneath and vertical zone beaters to hold linebackers and safeties. This is a pass play with no run or play-action tag, designed to attack single high shells and man coverage on the outside third. The primary read starts with the Y corner route against the deep half or deep third defender, then progresses to the underneath crossing routes and flex options if the corner is capped or the corner route is jumped by a sinking safety.
Pre snap, identify if the defense is showing two high safeties or rotating to single high, two high shells generally signal quarters or cover 2 which puts an extra defender over the top of the corner route. Watch cornerback depth and press alignment, a corner playing off with outside leverage is baiting the quarterback into the corner route for an easy jump and pick six opportunity. Post snap, key the flat defender's drop, if he sinks too deep trying to take away the corner route the underneath crossing routes will be wide open for an easy conversion. Look for user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the throwing lane to the Y receiver, aggressive human players will often bait this exact route with a defender parked in the passing window. Cover 3 with a hard rotating safety to the trips side is the toughest shell to beat here since it doubles the corner route immediately, blitz packages that bring pressure off the same side can also disrupt the timing needed for the corner route to develop.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see a single high safety rotate toward the Y receiver's side, expect the corner route to be doubled and look to your check down options immediately.
Use motion or a quick glance to identify man versus zone, against man coverage the Y corner route wins on a hard outside release, against zone you want to work the space between the flat defender and the deep defender.
This play shines on second and long or third and medium situations where defenses often sit in zone shells expecting a shorter route concept, catching them off guard with the vertical shot to the corner.
Pair Y Corner with Smash Y Sit or Smash Z Under in the same set to keep defenses guessing between high low smash concepts and the deep isolation shot, this forces defenders to respect both the flat and the corner simultaneously.
If the defense starts jumping the corner route after repeated calls, sequence into Wdt Post or Four Verticals to attack the void left behind by an aggressive corner or safety.
