Spacing Switch is a five-man empty route concept run out of the Shotgun Empty Bunch Y Flex formation, built off a bunch alignment on the right side. The backside X runs a vertical seam to hold the deep defender, the inline slot runs a short vertical hitch, and the bunch executes a switch release where the two inside receivers cross paths before settling into a corner route and a flat/out route to create horizontal spacing at three levels. This is a zone beater designed to attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 by stretching the underneath zone defenders horizontally while the switch release confuses man coverage leverage, with the primary read progressing from the flat route underneath to the spacing out, then working up to the corner route if the zone drops overplay the shallow stuff.
Defensive Reads
Presnap check safety depth and width, if both safeties are deep and outside the numbers you are likely facing Cover 4 which struggles against the horizontal stretch of this concept. Key the flat defender immediately after the snap, if he widens to the flat route the underneath spacing window opens for the out route sitting behind him. Watch for a corner blitz or nano blitz off the bunch side edge, since the switch release can leave the tackle exposed if protection is not adjusted with a hot route or chip assignment. If the defense rotates to a single high look with the corner playing outside leverage in man, expect the switch release to create natural separation against man coverage in the crossing traffic. Look for a linebacker sitting in a hook zone directly under the corner route, this is the primary defender that decides whether you throw the corner or check down to the flat.
Usage Tips
Presnap identify whether the defense is showing a two high shell or a single high safety, since Cover 3 and Cover 4 are the primary shells this concept exploits.
If the corner over the bunch is playing tight man, hot route the flat defender to a quick option route to beat a jam at the line before the switch release develops.
Use this on early downs or third and short to medium since the spacing concept lives underneath and does not need a ton of field to convert.
Pair this call with Dagger or Speed Dig Out from the same set so the defense has to respect the vertical seam every time you break the huddle, keeping linebackers honest against the shallow spacing routes.
Watch the flat defender post snap, if he sinks with the corner route instead of squatting on the flat, hit the underneath out route immediately for a easy pickup.
