Dagger out of Empty Bunch Y Flex lines up with a stacked bunch to the right and an isolated receiver to the left, giving the QB a clean pre-snap read on both sides. The bunch releases a deep vertical clearout up the numbers paired with a corner route working from inside out to the sideline, while the middle receiver from the bunch sits down on a square-in that settles into the void created underneath, and the backside X runs a hitch for a quick outlet. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built on a vertical clearout combined with a deep in route, with the primary read progressing from the dig or square-in sitting down against zone to the clearout receiver in man coverage if the linebacker or safety bites on the underneath route.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense shows two deep safeties or a single high shell, since Cover 2 and Cover 3 are the primary shells this concept is designed to exploit. Watch the corner over the bunch at the snap, if he sinks with the vertical clearout instead of jumping the square-in that is your green light to throw the in route on time. Key the middle linebacker or nickel defender's drop depth, a shallow zone drop into the throwing lane signals a Cover 4 or match zone call that can jump the square-in route and bait a turnover. User-controlled defenders sitting in a lurk technique underneath the dagger route are the biggest threat, if you see a defender sink into that hook zone before the ball is out, move to the backside hitch immediately. Man coverage with no safety help over the top invites a blown-up combo route since the underneath defender can trail the in route, so be ready to climb the ladder to the deep clearout receiver if he gets inside leverage.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties with soft corners this is a prime Cover 2 beater because the square-in will sit right in the seam between the flat defender and the deep half safety.
Against single high looks or Cover 3, trust the vertical clearout to pull the deep third or hole defender out of the way and hit the square-in as soon as it breaks flat, this window closes fast so anticipate the throw rather than waiting for full separation.
Use the backside hitch as a checkdown against man pressure or when the bunch gets jammed at the line, it is a safe way to move the chains on third and short.
Sequence this play alongside Flood or Z Spot from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the deep in route, forcing them to respect both the horizontal stretch and the vertical dagger concept.
Best called on second or third and medium to long when you need a defined high low read and want to attack zone drops without relying on a scramble drill.
