Swirl Hook N Go is a five man route empty concept out of the Bunch Y Flex look, built around a deep go route from the outside receiver in the bunch that stretches the defense vertically while the underside routes flood the middle. The inside bunch receiver runs a go up the sideline (red), the two receivers stacked to that side run a swirl combo (a flat/snag route into a corner route), and the two receivers on the backside run vertical hitches that break back to the quarterback (hook). There is no run action or play-action shown, this is a straight drop back pass with the empty backfield keeping five in the route to attack both zone and man coverage. Primary progression starts with the go route to see if it isolates a corner deep, then works down to the swirl/corner combo on the same side, and comes back to the backside hooks as the checkdown against soft zone drops.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment over the bunch side, a single high safety cheating over the top signals the offense expects the go route to be doubled or bracketed. Watch cornerback press alignment on the go route receiver, if he is playing off with a cushion the go route loses its explosive ceiling and the quarterback will likely check down. Post-snap, user the deep half or deep third defender toward the go route the moment the ball is snapped, this is the biggest home run threat in the concept. Zone defenses should sink the underneath flat and hook defenders into the swirl and corner combo area immediately, this concept is designed to exploit late or shallow zone drops. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined deep defenders and quick underneath zone drops shut this play down hardest, since the go route gets bracketed and the swirl combo has no room to sit.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing single high or two high safeties since the go route needs a soft corner or blown coverage to hit explosively.
Against man coverage, key the go route immediately off the snap because the bunch alignment can create natural rub leverage that separates the go from tight man coverage.
Against zone shells, work the swirl and corner combo underneath the deep safety, this concept is designed to sit down in the honey hole between the flat defender and the deep half player.
Use the backside hooks as your outlet against a delayed blitz or when the defense shows Cover 3 with a hard flat drop, they settle in soft spots and give the quarterback a quick, safe completion.
Pair this play with Dagger or Speed Dig Out from the same set to keep the defense guessing between vertical shots and intermediate crossers, this keeps linebackers and safeties from cheating on any one route depth.
