Defensive Reads
Watch for press man corners on the bunch receivers pre-snap since that is the biggest tell this play is designed to attack with rub and pick concepts. If the defense shows a single high safety, expect the corner route to be the primary target so get depth and be ready to break on that route from the deep half. Zone coverage with underneath defenders sinking hard can take away the return and pivot routes since those depend on man defenders getting picked off by traffic. User a linebacker or safety to lurk in the shallow crossing area to disrupt the return concept timing before it develops into the pivot back outside. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can rob the underneath return route and force the quarterback to hold the ball longer, creating a chance for a delayed blitz to get home.
Usage Tips
Check pre-snap for man coverage indicators like corners lined up tight on the bunch since the return concept thrives on rub and pick action against man defenders.
If you see two high safeties, prioritize the underneath return route working back to the flat since the corner route will likely be capped by a deep half defender.
Use motion before the snap to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation.
