Mtn Smash Y-Zig aligns out of Shotgun Doubles Z Close with 11 personnel, and pre-snap motion adjusts the receiver depth on the left side before the ball is snapped. To the right side the diagram shows a classic Smash concept combined with a Y-Zig: the outside receiver runs a corner route stretching vertically to the sideline while the slot defender underneath sits on a quick out, and the Y (tight end/inline X) breaks across the field on a deep zig route that crosses the middle of the field. On the backside, the receiver runs a deep comeback/post-corner breaker while the underneath receiver runs a short hook, giving the quarterback a two-level read on both sides. This is a pass play designed as a Cover 2 beater, using the corner route to stress the deep half safety while the Y-Zig occupies the middle linebacker and provides a crossing window against man coverage as well.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment: two deep safeties split evenly signals Cover 2 or Cover 4, which the Smash concept on the right is designed to exploit. Watch the cornerback's press or off alignment on the outside receiver running the corner route; if he presses expect him to try to jump the flat route, opening the corner throw behind him. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop: if he sinks deep to help against the Y-Zig crosser, the underneath flat route and comeback route on the backside become open. User-controlled defenders sitting in a shallow zone lurk position can jump the Y-Zig route, so be ready to check down to the flat or comeback if you see a defender sitting on that crossing lane. Man coverage with no safety help over the top can be diagnosed if a linebacker or slot defender follows the motion receiver across the formation, at which point the corner route and comeback route become priority throws against trailing defenders.
Use the pre-snap motion on the left receiver to identify if the defense is in man or zone: if a defender follows across the formation it confirms man coverage and opens up the deep comeback route on that side.
Against Cover 2 shells, prioritize the Smash concept to the right: the corner route will pull the deep safety while the flat route settles underneath, creating a natural high-low read on the cornerback.
If the middle linebacker drops with depth read the Y-Zig as your first option since it crosses into the vacated middle of the field, especially effective against Tampa 2 or Cover 3 zone drops.
This play works best on 2nd and medium to 3rd and long situations where the defense is more likely to sit in zone shells rather than blitz.
Pair this play with Mtn HB Sluggo or RPO Glance Post from the same set to keep the defense guessing between vertical shots and quick game answers, then come back to Mtn Smash Y-Zig once you have identified the coverage shell.
