Breakdown

Y-Sail out of Shotgun Doubles Z Close 11 personnel gives you a classic three-level stretch to the right side. The outside receiver runs a deep vertical to clear the top, the TE (Y) works a sail route sitting down at intermediate depth, and the inside slot receiver runs a flat route underneath, while the backside receiver runs a dig across the middle. The primary read progression starts with the vertical to see if a corner bites, then works down to the Y-Sail flat, then hits the underneath flat route as the checkdown against a hard flat rotation.

Defensive Reads

Identify single-high safety alignment pre-snap since Cover 3 corners have to choose between the deep vertical and the sail sitting underneath them, creating a natural conflict. Watch the flat defender and slot corner leverage at the snap, if they widen with the flat route the sail window opens up immediately behind them. Key on the middle linebacker's drop depth, a shallow drop signals Cover 2 or Tampa 2 and tells you the sail route will have to work over the top of the underneath zone. User the deep half safety to the sail side if you are on defense, since that safety has to balance the vertical clear-out and the sail sitting at intermediate depth. Bring a nano blitz off the edge to disrupt the quarterback's rhythm before the sail route fully develops, since this route combo relies on timing against zone drops.

Usage Tips

Check pre-snap for two-high shells since the vertical route stresses single-high corners in Cover 3 and the sail sits in the honey hole against Cover 2.

Use motion or a hard count to bait linebackers before the snap and confirm whether you are facing man or zone based on how the slot defender reacts.

Hot route the backside dig into a deeper cross if you see a Tampa 2 look with a deep middle linebacker sinking into the throwing lane.

Pair this with Mesh Spot or Double Slant Spot on early downs to set up quick game reads, then dial up Y-Sail on second or third and medium once the defense starts jumping underneath routes.

Combine with Z Crosser or Mtn HB Sluggo as a play-action complement so the sail route timing looks identical to your run action pre-snap.
