Breakdown

Escape is a quick-hitting man beater out of Shotgun Doubles Z Close with 11 personnel. To the closed (right) side, the TE runs a Slant while the outside receiver runs a Flat route underneath, creating a Slant Flat combo that stresses the flat defender and any inside linebacker in man coverage. On the backside, the outside WR runs a deep Out breaking toward the sideline while the inside slot runs a vertical release into a corner cut upfield, giving the QB a second window if the play side is jumped. The primary read starts with the Slant Flat side (TE Slant first, Flat second), then works backside to the Out route if the underneath defenders sit on the short stuff.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the corner over the Flat receiver is in man coverage; tight man alignment signals the Slant Flat combo will be there immediately. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap: if the underneath defender flows hard to the TE's Slant, the Flat route behind him is the answer. This play struggles against zone shells like Cover 2 or Cover 3 where the flat defender sits and reads the QB's eyes instead of chasing the TE. Key any user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone, since Escape's underneath routes are vulnerable to a rover jumping the Slant Flat combo. Against blitz-heavy man coverage, the backside deep Out can become the answer if the play side gets clogged, so check for overloaded fronts that leave the backside singled up.

Usage Tips

Fire this from Escape on early downs against man coverage looks where the flat defender has to widen to the TE's slant conflict.

Use the pre-snap motion or alignment to confirm man versus zone: if the corner across from the Flat receiver is playing off, the flat route will pop open on the snap.

Hot route the Flat receiver into a quicker release if the defense shows a hard edge blitz look, since the Slant Flat side needs to hit fast before pressure arrives.

Pair Escape with Mesh Spot or Double Slant Spot in the same set to keep defenses honest on quick game reads, forcing linebackers to hesitate between crossing patterns and this Slant Flat action.

Best used on third and short to third and medium, since the Slant and Flat combo is designed to convert quickly against man coverage without needing a deep shot.
