Breakdown

RPO Zone Peek Glance is a true run-pass option out of Shotgun Doubles Z Close that pairs an inside zone run with a glance route from the slot and a peek read from the backside. The offensive line executes zone blocking while the quarterback reads a designated second level defender, typically the play side linebacker or nickel, to decide between handing the ball off or pulling and throwing the glance. This is a zone beater at its core since the glance route sits down in the throwing lane vacated by linebackers flowing to stop the run, and the primary read progression goes run key first, then glance, then peek as the emergency outlet if the defender sits on the glance.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side linebacker or nickel defender at the snap, if he steps up to fill the run gap the glance window is open behind him Identify two high shells pre-snap since split safety looks with sound linebacker discipline are the toughest coverage to beat this concept against Man coverage with inside leverage on the slot defender can jump the glance route early, so keying the corner and nickel alignment before the snap tells you if the throw is live Look for a user lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone, an aggressive human controlled linebacker camping the glance route will bait a bad read and generate a turnover Overloaded run blitzes with extra defenders crashing downhill actually favor the pass side of the RPO, so respect blitz indicators like safety creep and linebacker depth cheating toward the line

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and if the defense is showing six or more in the box, lean toward pulling the glance immediately instead of testing the run fit

Identify single high versus two high shells pre-snap since single high safeties tend to trigger downhill on run action which opens the glance window big

Hot route the backside peek receiver into a deeper option route against teams that sit their linebackers to remove the quick throw

Use this on early downs in normal distance to keep defenses honest, then sequence into Read Option or Inside Zone from the same set so the defense cannot sit on the RPO key

Pair with RPO Glance Post later in a series once the defense adjusts to taking away the shallow glance, forcing the second level defender to respect the deeper shot
