Mtn Spinner HB Inside is a run play out of Shotgun Doubles Hip that uses pre-snap motion to shift numbers before the snap. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking straight ahead at the second level with the HB taking a spin action handoff and hitting the inside gap behind the center and guard. This is a designed inside run, not a play-action or RPO look, and the primary read is the interior gap: the ball carrier keys the double team and A-gap push before bouncing to either B-gap based on flow from the linebackers.
Key the linebacker depth pre-snap, if both linebackers are sitting shallow at five yards or less they are likely reading run and will fill fast against the inside spin action. Watch for defensive tackles shooting gaps aggressively, a one-gap penetrating front can blow up the mesh point before the HB completes the spin, so user a defensive tackle to shoot the A-gap and disrupt the exchange. If the defense motions a linebacker or safety down into the box after seeing the offensive motion, that is a sign they are keying run support and will crash down hard, look to counter with a play-action call from this set on the next snap. Man coverage on the perimeter with a defender chasing the motion man leaves light boxes, which favors this inside run heavily since it removes a defender from run support. Zone coverage shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with linebackers staying in their run fits and reading the mesh point can string this play out, so user the middle linebacker to fill the inside gap and force the HB to bounce into pursuit.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is in man or zone, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation it confirms man coverage and opens up run lanes since a defender is removed from the box read.
Run this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when the defense is showing base personnel or light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box.
If the defense shows a stacked box with eight in the box pre-snap, consider audibling to Mtn WR Outside Zone or HB Slip Screen from this same set to punish an overloaded front.
Pair this play with Mtn PA Spinner later in a series since the spinner mesh point action looks identical, forcing linebackers to bite on run fits before you hit them with play-action off the same look.
Trust the interior double team on early snaps and avoid trying to bounce it outside too early, patience through the mesh point is what makes the spin action effective against gap-shooting defensive tackles.
