HB Draw out of Shotgun Doubles Hip is a designed run play that disguises as a pass to freeze the pass rush before handing off to the HB. The diagram shows two outside receivers releasing vertically to occupy corners while the offensive line sets up in pass protection before engaging run blocks at the second level, opening a lane through the middle of the field. This is a zone beater and blitz beater that punishes aggressive four man and five man rushes that get up field too fast, with the primary read being the initial hole created by the center and guards before bouncing outside if the alley is clogged.
Watch for defensive ends and tackles crashing hard off the snap, since over pursuit up field is exactly what this play is designed to exploit. Man coverage shells with corners in press or trail technique are ideal because it pulls defenders away from the box on the snap. If the Mike linebacker sits still and reads the backfield instead of biting on the pass fake, the draw lane will disappear quickly. Watch for a user controlled defender spying the backfield or hovering in the middle of the field, as this is a classic counter to HB Draw and will blow up the play at the mesh point. Zone coverages with linebackers dropping deep immediately open running lanes, but zone coverages that keep linebackers shallow and reading run first will shut this play down.
Call this on early downs like first and second and ten when the defense expects a pass concept out of Doubles Hip personnel.
Check the depth of the defensive tackles pre-snap, if they are lined up wide in a pass rush stance the interior draw lane will be there.
Use the vertical releases from the outside receivers to bait corners and safeties into dropping deep, which removes them from run support.
Pair this play with Levels or PA Go Slot Cross from the same set so the defense has to respect the pass first before you sneak in the draw.
Avoid calling this against heavy blitz packages that send extra defenders through the A and B gaps immediately, since the delayed blocking scheme cannot pick them up in time.
