Mtn HB Sweep is an outside zone run out of Shotgun Doubles Flex WK Pats that uses jet or fly motion to shift the box and manipulate defensive flow before the snap. The offensive line and motion man work together to stretch the play side, with the tackle and guard reaching outside shoulders while the fullback or motion man cracks the alley defender. The primary read is the playside alley defender: if the edge is sealed and the linebackers overpursue with the motion flow, the HB presses outside for a lane, and if defenders squeeze down hard, he cuts back through the vacated interior gap.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment: a single high safety rotating late often signals man coverage or a blitz, which can leave the edge exposed if the defense sends extra rushers. Watch linebacker depth and gap alignment before the snap, since linebackers cheating toward the motion side tip an aggressive run fit that this sweep is designed to exploit with cutback lanes. Post-snap, user the playside linebacker or strong safety to stay square and read the sweep flow rather than flowing hard with the jet motion, which shuts down the outside lane immediately. Watch for edge defenders staying home or squeezing down hard on the run action, since disciplined edge play with a hard contain forces the cutback read and can blow up the play if defenders diagnose it fast. This sweep struggles against fast flow defenses with disciplined linebackers who stay in their run fits, and it gets stuffed by nano blitz packages that crash the edge before the motion man can reach his block.
Use the pre-snap motion to bait linebackers into flowing hard with the jet action, then check if the defense shifts its front or has a defender spy the motion man before the snap.
Identify the coverage shell early: against single high safety looks the alley is usually thinner, while two high shells often leave a cleaner cutback lane if the safety triggers on run flow.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick slant or hitch if you see man coverage crashing hard on the motion, giving you a built in bailout option if the sweep gets stringed out.
Best called on early downs (first and ten, second and short) when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts rather than nickel or dime blitz packages.
