Mtn Slot Post is a motion-based man beater out of Shotgun Doubles Flex WK, designed to attack single-high and man coverage shells with a slot receiver post as the primary route. The motion across the formation forces the defense to declare its coverage rules pre-snap, either bumping a defender across or revealing man leverage, while the backside runs a route combo to hold the safety and clear the middle of the field. The primary read progression starts with the post out of motion for an explosive shot play, then works to the underneath or comeback breaking route if the post is capped by a deep safety.
Pre-snap, check safety alignment, a single high safety in the middle of the field signals man or Cover 3 and tells you the post has a clean lane to attack the seam. Watch the cornerback over the motion receiver, if he trails across the formation without help it confirms man coverage and the post should win. Post-snap, key the deep safety's first step, if he sits and reads the quarterback expect a Cover 3 or Cover 4 shell that can cap the post, so be ready to check down. Identify user-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate middle zone, they can jump the post route if the quarterback holds the ball too long. Watch for disguised blitz packages off the edge, since the post takes a few seconds to develop, a well timed blitz can force an early or inaccurate throw before the route breaks open.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you have a confirmed man beater and should trust the post immediately. Look for single-high shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3, this play is most dangerous against those coverages since the post can split the safety and cornerback. Hot route the backside receiver into a shallow drag or spot route if you expect zone coverage to give yourself a quick underneath answer against Cover 4 or Cover 2 shell drops. Best called on second and medium or third and long when you need an explosive gain, since the post takes time to develop and needs a clean pocket.
