Pre-snap motion helps identify man versus zone by showing whether a defender follows across the formation, and the crossing mesh routes create natural traffic to rub off man defenders while the tight end works the corner for a big chunk play over the top. The primary read progression starts with the Y corner route against man coverage or a blown assignment, then works down to the mesh crossers underneath if the corner is capped by a safety over the top.
Pre-snap, check safety alignment: a single high safety shaded toward the corner route side signals a possible cap read that can take away the Y corner throw. Watch cornerback press alignment on the outside receivers, tight press man coverage struggles against the mesh traffic since defenders get picked off crossing each other.
