RPO Power Alert

Shotgun·Doubles Flex WK Pats·Personnel not specified

Breakdown

RPO Power Alert is a run-pass option built off a Power run concept out of the Shotgun Doubles Flex WK Pats set, giving the quarterback a pre-snap and post-snap alert to throw a quick perimeter route if the numbers favor the pass. The blocking scheme pulls the backside guard for a traditional Power run look with a lead blocker through the hole, while the RPO alert route (typically a bubble or quick out to the flex slot) gives the QB an instant conflict read against overaggressive linebackers. This play is a legitimate dual-threat: it beats light boxes and off man coverage on the run side, and it punishes zone defenders or blitzing linebackers who crash down on the run fake by throwing off the alert key.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the box count and safety depth. A light box with two high safeties often signals man or zone coverage that favors the RPO throw over the run. Watch the slot cornerback or nickel defender's alignment. If he is playing off with outside leverage, the alert route to the flex receiver should be open quickly against man beaters. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step. Aggressive downhill linebackers who bite on the run fake open up the RPO throw, while disciplined linebackers who sit in their run-pass conflict zone shut it down. Watch for a user-controlled defender lurking near the flex alert route. A smart user player will sit on the RPO throw, so if you see a defender hovering in that area, stick with the Power run instead. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with linebackers reading run-pass keys are the toughest matchup for this play, since disciplined zone drops can take away both the run lane and the alert throw simultaneously.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap: if the defense has six or more defenders in the box, pull the trigger on the RPO alert throw immediately instead of handing it off.

Key the play side linebacker or slot defender at the snap. If he steps up to fill the run gap, throw the bubble or out route to the flex receiver for an easy conversion.

Use this play on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when defenses are more likely to load the box expecting the run, since that is exactly when the alert route hits hardest.

Pair RPO Power Alert with Mtn HB Sweep and HB Counter from the same set to keep defenders honest on outside run fits, then come back to this play so the RPO alert route punishes linebackers flowing hard to stop those perimeter runs.

Sequence RPO Power Alert with Patriots Drag or Slot Cross on the next snap so if the defense sells out to stop the alert throw, you can attack the middle of the field with a full route concept instead.
