RPO Alert Trap lines up out of Shotgun Double Stack with two stacked receivers wide left, a stacked twin release wide right, and an 11 personnel look with a fullback or slot receiver bubbling underneath into the trap-read window. The core of the play is a trap run scheme up the middle, with the HB running through a gap while the QB reads a second-level defender to decide between the handoff and a quick pop pass to the underneath receiver. This is a run-first RPO built to punish light boxes and overly aggressive linebackers, since the primary read progression is box count and second-level flow first, then the underneath alert route if the defense crashes down on the trap.
Defensive Reads
Watch the middle linebacker depth and flow, if he crashes hard toward the play side gap immediately the trap block can seal him and spring the HB. Key the defensive tackle alignment on the trap side, a shaded or gap-jumping tackle who overruns the play is exactly what this concept is designed to exploit. Identify single high versus two high safety shells presnap, single high with an aggressive strong safety in the box is the ideal look for the run since it usually means fewer numbers to the play side. Look for a slot corner or nickel defender sitting on the stack alert route, if he is reading run and creeping forward that is the signal to pull the ball on the RPO read. Beware of a defense that shows a nano blitz off the edge or brings extra second level pressure with a delayed blitzer, since interior pressure can beat the trap blocking before the read even develops.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only trust the run side of this RPO if you count five or fewer defenders in the box.
Use the stacked receiver alignment on both sides to bait cornerbacks into soft coverage, then trust the trap blocking scheme when linebackers are shaded away from the play side gap.
Hot route the underneath alert receiver into a quick out or hitch versus man coverage if you see a corner sitting hard on the stack to remove any natural rub confusion.
Pair this play with RPO Alert Screen and RPO Trap Alert Screen from the same set so the defense has to respect both the downhill trap look and the perimeter screen without changing your presnap motion or formation tendencies.
Call this on early downs, especially second and short or first and ten, when defenses are more likely to sell out against the run and open up the alert throw.
