Overload 3 is a Cover 3 zone blitz out of the Quarter Normal set with Big Quarter 3-1-7 personnel, sending an overload rush to one side while dropping three deep defenders and underneath zone defenders behind it. The diagram shows three deep zone dropping defensive backs splitting the field into thirds, two purple underneath zone defenders crossing shallow with the corners, and a middle linebacker sitting in a shallow hook zone. Up front, four rushers converge with two crashing into the same gap on one side, creating an overload look designed to win with a numbers advantage against the protection rather than through disguised coverage. This is a zone blitz beater against man protection schemes, and the primary read is getting the extra rusher home off the overload side before the quarterback can climb the pocket or find his hot route.
Defensive Reads
Read the running back and tight end pre-snap, if either stays in to chip or block on the overload side the play is live and the extra rusher should win quickly. Watch the offensive line splits before the snap, wider splits often mean the quarterback expects pressure and may have a quick game answer, so be ready to drop your spy underneath. Post-snap, key the quarterback's eyes toward the overload side, if he immediately looks away he has identified the blitz and is going to his checkdown or hot route away from pressure. This play is vulnerable to hot routes and slide protection that account for the extra rusher, so if the offense consistently picks it up switch to a straight Cover 3 call to stay unpredictable. Against empty or spread sets, watch for a quick out or slant to the overload side since the offense may be using route timing to beat the extra rusher before he arrives.
Usage Tips
Call Overload 3 on early downs or second and medium when offenses are still in base personnel and less likely to check into max protect. Identify the offensive line's protection slide pre-snap, if the line is set to slide away from your overload side you get a free runner immediately. Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait the quarterback into a bad protection call before you send the overload rush. Pair this with Cover 3 Spy earlier in a series so the offense sees a similar shell and cannot key the overload blitz by alignment alone. Mix in Fz 3 Sky from the same set to disguise your deep coverage rotation and keep quarterbacks from sitting on the overload tell.
