Cover 3 Mable is a base zone defense out of the Quarter formation's Big Quarter 3-1-7 personnel, built to defend against spread passing attacks in nickel and dime situations. The coverage rolls to a three deep, four under shell with the single high safety splitting the field while corners sink to their deep thirds, and the underneath defenders (two hook/curl players and two flat defenders) wall off intermediate zone beaters. This is a zone beater killer at its core, but the primary read progression for the defense is to identify the number three receiver first since the pattern matched linebacker keys that release to determine if it is a curl flat combo or a dig coming across the middle.
Watch for trips or bunch formations to the same side, which stresses the flat and curl defenders and can create natural picks against your underneath zone drops. If the offense runs four verticals, trust your deep third corners to stay disciplined and let the single high safety help split the numbers, but be ready to user the safety toward any crosser threatening the middle void. Smash concepts and out and up combos to the flat defender's side are the primary man beater style route combos that stress this shell, so key the number two receiver's release to anticipate if he is stemming outside for the corner route. Post snap, watch the running back or tight end leaking out on delayed wheel or angle routes since the flat defender's zone drop can be late to react if he is reading run action first. Diagnose play action rollouts quickly since Cover 3 Mable's underneath defenders can be pulled forward by run fakes, opening throwing lanes to the sticks against aggressive linebacker flow.
Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to attack the flats or run mesh and drag concepts that typically shred single high zones. Motion the running back or use the strafe technique presnap to disguise the middle of field closed shell and bait the QB into thinking you are in a two high look before the snap. Hot route your flat defenders out wider if you see stacked receivers or bunch formations, since Cover 3 Mable's default flat drops can get picked by rub routes. Pair this call with 3 Double Mable and 3 DBL Mable Cloud in the same game plan so the offense sees a similar presnap picture but gets different deep coverage rules, forcing the QB to process late instead of keying preread checks. Use user control on the deep middle safety to jump any high low read the offense tries on your seam or hook defenders, since the CPU alone will not consistently make that play.
