RPO Read Jet Slide is a run-pass option out of Pistol 12 personnel that pairs a jet motion sweep look with an inside zone slide up front and a single vertical/comeback route breaking outside off the mesh point. The offensive line executes a slide protection to the play side while the read defender (typically the alley or flat defender) determines whether the quarterback hands off the jet action or pulls and throws the route breaking outside near the numbers. This is a true RPO, not a straight run or dropback pass, and it is designed to punish light boxes and aggressive flat defenders by giving the QB a pre-snap numbers advantage plus a post-snap key read.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the alley or flat defender responsible for both the jet motion and the run fit, since that single player is the entire read for the offense. If the defense shows two-high safeties with the flat defender staying wide and disciplined, this play struggles because both the run lane and the throw window get taken away simultaneously. Man coverage with a corner locked outside on the route can bait the QB into a contested throw, so user a defender to jump the sideline route if you diagnose the pass option. Watch for linebacker overpursuit toward the jet motion, since that flow creates a cutback lane for the inside zone slide if the QB hands it off. Blitzes off the edge away from the slide protection can beat this play before the RPO read even develops, so pre-snap alignment showing an unblocked rusher off that slide side is a major tell to jump the throw.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and identify whether the read defender is crashing down on run or sitting in the flat, since that single defender dictates the handoff versus throw decision.
Use jet motion pre-snap to force the defense to declare rotation or adjust linebacker flow, which widens running lanes if they stay static or opens the throw window if they overrotate.
This play pairs well with Jet Pass Fk Zone and Zone Fake Jet in this set since all three sell the same jet motion look, keeping linebackers and safeties guessing on run fits versus pass drops.
Best used on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when defenses are more likely to stack the box expecting run, since that light perimeter is exactly what the RPO exploits.
Against teams that spam Cover 2 or Cover 3 zone shells, trust the run read more often since the flat defender usually widens with the jet motion, opening the alley for the handoff.
