Breakdown

Wide Zone is an outside zone run play out of the Pistol Trips Y Over formation with 11 personnel, designed to get the HB working laterally before pressing a crease upfield. The offensive line flows in unison to the play side, reach blocking defenders and creating cutback lanes based on how the defensive front flows. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so the primary read progression is the HB reading the play side edge defender and the flow of the linebackers to decide between bouncing outside, pressing the B gap, or cutting back against overpursuit.

Defensive Reads

Check the defensive line alignment before the snap, since a shaded nose or 3 technique to the play side can clog the initial zone flow and force an immediate cutback read. Watch the play side linebacker depth, if he is sitting close to the line in run fits this play struggles, but if he is at depth reading run flow the reach blocks create easy running lanes. Identify if the defense is running a scrape exchange or edge contain call, since a disciplined edge defender who stays home on the zone action can string the run outside and force a bad angle. Look for user controlled defenders flying downhill too fast off zone flow keys, since that overpursuit is exactly what the cutback lane is designed to punish. Heavy blitz packages with extra defenders crashing the line can beat this play before the zone blocks set, so bail into a quick pass concept like Sprint Stick if you see max pressure looks pre snap.

Usage Tips

Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box before the snap, since Wide Zone loses value against stacked run fronts with extra linebackers or safeties creeping down. Use manual control on the HB after the handoff and press the line hard before committing to a cut, letting the zone blocking develop instead of running blindly to the sideline. Pair this with HB Zone and HB Zone Wk earlier in a series to condition the defense into flowing hard, then hit Wide Zone again once you see linebackers cheating toward the strength called out by Trips. Against aggressive edge defenders who crash inside on run reads, bounce it outside immediately since the reach block on the play side tackle or tight end usually wins that leverage battle. Use this on early downs, first and second and short to medium, to stay ahead of the chains and set up PA Stretch or PA Dagger off the same run action later in the series.
