Breakdown

HB Zone Wk is the "weak" version of the outside zone run out of Pistol Trips Y Over, sending the zone flow away from the trips bunch and toward the weak side of the formation where the Y (TE) is aligned. The offensive line steps in unison toward the play side, reaching and climbing to create a running lane while the HB reads blocks from the backside guard out to the edge defender. This is a base run play, not play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression is backside cutback to frontside bounce: the HB presses the line, reads the first down lineman for a cutback lane, then reads the edge defender (DE or OLB) to decide whether to bend it outside or plant upfield.

Defensive Reads

Check the linebacker depth before the snap: stacked or crashing linebackers on the weak side signal a run blitz that can blow up the cutback lane. Look at the defensive end alignment on the weak side edge, a wide 9-technique invites a quick bounce outside while a tight 5-technique forces a strict cutback read. This play beats base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts that overcommit numbers to the trips side, leaving the weak side light in the box. Even fronts or defenses that slide the nose and 3-technique away from trips can clog the cutback lane, so be ready to bounce rather than force it inside. Post-snap, user-controlled defenders flowing hard downhill on run fits are the biggest threat, watch for a user linebacker sitting in the backside gap trying to blow up the zone read before committing the HB.

Usage Tips

Use HB Zone Wk when the defense shows a heavier box on the strong side (trips) since the weak side often has fewer defenders to beat before the second level.

Watch pre-snap for the Sam or Will linebacker cheating over the trips bunch, that alignment opens up the weak side run lane you are attacking.

Motion the trips receiver into a stack or shift pre-snap to bait linebackers into flowing strong, which slows their reaction to the weak side zone action.

Pair this with HB Zone (the strong side counterpart) and Pin Pull Sweep to keep linebackers guessing on run direction snap after snap.

Best called on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short to medium) when you want to stay ahead of the chains and set up PA Dagger or Sprint Stick off the same run action later in the series.
