Pin Pull Sweep is an outside zone style run play out of Pistol Trips Y Over that uses pin and pull blocking on the frontside to create a wide alley for the HB to attack the edge. The offensive line pins down on defenders lined up inside while the playside guard and tackle pull to lead block around the corner, and the tight end or slot receiver arcs to seal the edge defender or force player. The primary read for the ball carrier is the pulling linemen: press the line of scrimmage to bait the defense inside, then follow the pullers through the alley, with the option to bend it back if the frontside gets clogged by fast flow from the second level.
Watch for the edge defender crashing hard inside on the snap, this is the key indicator the sweep will hit for a big gain since the alley is uncontested. Read the flow of the linebackers, if they immediately flow toward the pulling guard and tackle without hesitation the cutback lane opens up behind them. Identify user controlled defenders spying the backfield or sitting outside the tackle box, since a disciplined edge defender who stays home can blow up the pulling scheme before it develops. Look for stacked box fronts with an extra defender crashing downhill pre-snap, this alignment along with an aggressive run blitz call is the primary counter to pin and pull sweep concepts. Check if the defense rotates a safety down into the box after the snap, a fast rotating safety can arrive in time to string the play out and force a minimal gain.
Check the defensive front before the snap and look for light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since this play struggles against stacked fronts with an extra run support defender.
Identify if the defense is showing outside contain from the edge, if the force defender squeezes hard down the line, set up a cutback lane by pressing the mesh point longer before declaring outside.
Use motion or a quick glance at the strong safety alignment to confirm whether the defense is in a two high shell, which typically leaves fewer defenders in the box and favors the sweep.
Pair this play with HB Power G and HB Zone from the same set so the defense cannot key on one blocking scheme, this keeps linebackers honest and slows down aggressive edge fills.
Call this on early downs and short yardage or goal line situations where defenses often sell out to stop inside runs, since the edge conflict from pin and pull blocking punishes over aggressive inside linebackers.
Avoid calling this into predictable blitz downs against defenses that show heavy edge pressure looks, since fast off ball linebackers can beat the pullers to the point of attack.
